Shipwrecked Family (Stage II of the admissions portfolio process for 2D Animation)
Here is a simple drawing exercise that we would like you to complete and return to us. This exercise is similar to what you might be asked to do in one of our first semester courses. Please follow the instructions below:
Complete the exercise as requested and email the two JPG images (one for each exercise) to me by Tuesday, April 24, 2018 We will use the exercises to help us with our final selection.
Design the look for new animated show. The show is about a family that is shipwrecked on a desert island. The family members are: mother, father, teenage son and teenage daughter and the family pet.
A. Create original designs of the family members and draw them on one page as a group.
B. Create an original layout design of the exterior of their dwelling and draw it on one page.
Details:
The characters should be drawn with structure and depth. Not flat characters.
The layout should show proper perspective and your ability to research any objects that you may not be familiar with.
Grading Criteria:
We would like to see original characters with personality and appeal, drawn with a fairly smooth line. This can be a “clean rough” drawing (see the examples below).
Both drawings should be done on letter-sized paper and scanned as a JPG image. Please do not use digital tools to draw your final design. Pencils and paper only. Do not shade or colour in the drawings. Line drawings are what we want to see (again as in the examples below).
Why we work in blue pencil:
A medium-blue pencil line (as shown below) allows you to "build" your design starting off with a light pressure line that helps you plan your drawing. As you find the right line you draw with increasing pressure to create a darker line. This allows you to make "mistakes" and to try out lines and shapes but then improve on them by going over it with a slightly darker and darker line. A middle blue colour is used because it allows for several stages from very light to very dark.
Please email the two JPG images (as attachments) directly to: dperro@capilanou.ca
